No female officer, enlisted person, or civil servant within DOD will be safe from harrassment, assault, or rape, if Pete Hegseth is the SECDEF. I mean, it's bad enough for them already but the military had actually made some significant improvements in the past several years. Now they're going to have a rapist as SECDEF? I can't believe his nomination will hold up long enough for Trump to get into office.

Pete Hegseth’s Secret History: A whistle-blower report and other documents suggest that Trump’s nominee to run the Pentagon was forced out of previous leadership positions for financial mismanagement, sexist behavior, and being repeatedly intoxicated on the job.
By Jane Mayer

BLUF: Hegseth is an absolutely disgusting, drunken, rapey pig. Which is probably why Trump wants him.

Biden pardons his son Hunter despite previous pledges not to

The decision spares Hunter a possible prison sentence and reverses Biden's promises not to use the powers of the presidency for the benefit of his family members.

I'm continuing to go through old family VHS movies to sort out the ones I have digital backups for, but my mind is constantly doing math, constantly popping up thoughts of "She had only 8 years left to live" or "He had only 20 years left to live" ☹️

"So now that Trump's won the 2024 election with lots of help from some of these Broligarchs and Elon Musk is trying to act like Trump's co-president with plans to eviscerate government through massive cuts. What do you think we're going to see in the next few years in terms of the partnership between the government and the oligarchy?

Brooke Harrington: I see three major public policy changes. One is the increasing prevalence of what you might call representation without taxation, which is just the set of Broligarchs not being subject to the law in the way that the rest of us are, and yet having the ear of the president, or better yet, dictating terms to the president or being deputized by the president to slash federal agencies, to slash federal budgets without any of the accountability that we're used to seeing even under Republican administrations. mean, no vetting, no elected office. It's just, you know, by fiat, King Trump says: “I'm delegating the dismantling of the federal government to these guys I like for now.” ...

They will probably go a ways in pushing women out of public life, especially if they succeed in doing away with the Department of Education. Anyone who has a child, who has any sort of learning disability, any kind of disability at all, the Department of Education is the part of the government that requires public schools to accommodate those kids. And if there's no more Department of Education, no more accommodations, they're expensive. So what happens to those kids? They're probably gonna go home into the care of their mothers, who will have to quit their jobs to take care of them. ...

And finally, most alarming to me, although I'm plenty alarmed about the other two things: The one policy change that makes me feel like I'm tied to the tracks and watching a freight train bear down on me is the shenanigans they want to get up to with crypto and the finances of the US government. ...

Gil Duran: That's been one thing that's been very concerning and sort of shocking to me is the degree to which no one is telling Americans what crypto is really about. Even as it becomes obvious that crypto is largely a scam that's being used for crimes and Americans have lost billions and billions of dollars to crypto scammers. think it was $5.7 billion last year alone. And yet you have even democratic politicians lining up to be supporters of crypto and portray it as a very important part of the future."

Girl, I am right there on those tracks with you. That right there is frightening. And I don't know if anybody's paying attention.

How the 'Broligarchs' plan to use Trump

One of the things that I think anybody can observe is that, even among the ultra-rich, they never seem to have enough. Never enough wealth, never enough toys, never enough. So what do you want if you've bought everything already? You want limitless wealth, limitless power. Even the feeble laws

Is the #H5N1 virus currently circulating in cows just a milder virus and that's why those infected on dairy farms get mild symptoms?

Not necessarily, some virologists say. In fact, it appears to be highly pathogenic in a variety of animals other than cows and humans. On top of that, "About 40% of the cases this year have been workers infected while culling birds on affected poultry operations. Their exposures were different, but their symptoms were similar to those of the dairy farmworkers."

Some virologists think that humans' exposures to post-2009 H1N1 flu has provided some level of immunity against the N1 neuraminidase. If so, that would be good news. Florian Krammer, a flu virologist at Mount Sinai, is among the proponents of the theory that there is cross-protection from exposure to viruses with N1 neuraminidases. “In my opinion, [neuraminidase]-based immunity plays a big role in protection here...”

But this doesn't explain why the Asian CFR remains around 50% and an outbreak in Egypt had a CFR of about 30%. Virologists assume that there are some unreported mild or asymptomatic cases that cause the CFR to be inflated, but disagree to what extent. But studies to find this information have come up largely empty. The CDC discusses seroprevalence studies* of H5N1 to determine this, which found not much. "Data to date show that, although many people have been monitored after exposure to H5N1 bird flu virus-infected poultry, wild birds, and confirmed human patients globally, very few human infections have been detected." More recently, a very small study of U.S. dairy workers (n=115) showed about 7% seroconversion.

What we know for sure is the H5N1 we see now has to change to become the deadly pandemic we've long feared, and countries should prepare for that possibility.
